This is a clever variation on an old puzzle.

The original puzzle is: you are confronted with two twin guards who each guard a door. Behind one door is freedom, behind the other is certain death. You know that one guard always tells the truth and the other always lies. You are allowed exactly one question for exactly one guard. What do you do?

One of the guards tells you, "One of us always tells the truth, the other always lies." You may ask exactly one question of exactly one guard. What do you do? Keep in mind that you don't actually know anything beyond what the one guard said.
